DISCUSSION GROUP AND WORKING SESSION

Group activities are intended to provide attendees with the opportunity to exchange information and ideas related to the PME.

Conference participants will need to select which sessions they would prefer to attend and indicate this in their registration. Group activities take place during the parallel time allotments, and have limited space.

Discussion Groups (DG)

Proposals for a Discussion Group were submitted to the International program Committee by means of a one-page abstract. The deadline for the submission of DG proposals was March 1st, 2010. The number of the submitted proposals was 11.

Proposals of a DG were reviewed by the members of the IPC. Notifications of the decision of the program Committee were sent by April, 2nd, 2010.

Accepted proposals for a Discussion Group will be included in the conference proceedings, provided the full Conference Fees for both the coordinators and the assistant coordinators are paid before May 17th, 2010.

Two 90-minute sessions will be allocated to Discussion Groups.

National Presentation (NP)

A National Presentation is intended to give participants an overview of the research activities carried out in a hosting country and its potential contribution to the community’s work.

This year the presentation is entitled:

Research in Mathematics Education in Brazil.

Presenters: Maria Aparecida Viggiani Bicudo, Gelsa Knijnik, Maria do Carmo Domite, Maria da Conceição F.R.Fonseca.

The presentation focuses on research in mathematics education carried out in Brazil. The NP elaborates on development of the current situation, highlights concerns and challenges faced by the scientific community, summarizes the main research areas activity and finally discusses the contribution off the relevant research on Land Workers Education, Indigenous Education and Adult Education, in an attempt to provide insights into the above concerns and challenges.

Early Birds

PME has a mechanism to encourage and support inexperienced researchers by offering them the possibility of an Early Bird Procedure for submitting Research Reports or Short Oral Communications.

Inexperienced researchers who do not have access to appropriate local support and who would like to receive guidance from more experienced PME researchers can submit their paper to a coordinator who is appointed by the International Committee. The coordinator will then assign the paper to an appropriate mentor and make sure that the communication between the mentor and novice-researcher flows satisfactorily.

Please note that this procedure is meant to provide feedback to written reports. It is not meant as support for conducting research. The papers submitted should be accompanied by a statement in which authors declare that they are researcher with little previous experience in writing research reports (or journal articles) and have limited access to experienced advice. The mentors will correspond with the authors and will guide them in strengthening their papers. The mentoring does not guarantee acceptance, as the papers will still undergo the regular PME reviewing procedures.

People who wish to have a mentor to submit a Research report or Short Oral Communication for the PME35 Conference in 2011 should contact the coordinator as early as possible, no later than September 1st, 2010.
