Belo Horizonte is the capital of the Brazilian State of Minas Gerais State, and it is not far from the two best known Brazilian cities - Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. It is a late nineteen century city, planned to be the capital of the State.

Belo Horizonte provides a different natural beauty from the well known one of Rio de Janeiro. It is built on the mountains and still within propitious short distance from forests and water falls, in the National and State Parks such as those of Serra do Cipó and Serra do Rola Moça. It is also close to our old colonial capital, an early eighteenth century town named Ouro Preto, which is a masterpiece of architecture and art declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

In spite of being denominated an industrial city, we are far from being compared with our richest city of São Paulo. On the other hand, with our traditions embedded in agricultural roots, Belo Horizonte keeps a sort of quiet pace which results in a good quality of life for its citizens.

People from Belo Horizonte are friendly; enjoy tourists, and meetings around the kitchen table to talk, or to play and sing, while eating home made cooking. Our culinary traditions reflect Indigenous, European and African origins and it is appreciated in Brazil.

Some internationally known artists are from the State of Minas, such as the rock group Sepultura, the dance group Corpo, and the street theater group Galpão.

Also, the Brazilian President Juscelino Kubitcheck, who built Brasilia was from Minas Gerais. In Minas Gerais was born first organized independence movement, during the Brazilian colonial interlude.
